Date: 15/05/2014

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation joins the International Community in observing 15 May as the International Day of Families in its twentieth anniversary. The chosen theme for this year “Families Matter for the Achievement of Development Goals; International Year of the Family + 20” highlights the importance of families as an important actors within the efforts to ensure that development of societies goes in hand with strengthening the family unit. This is also in consonance with the strong and cherished tradition of the family values in Islam. Islam takes great interest in the establishment of a stable and secure family institution. It is evident from the many proclamations supporting and protecting Islamic family. Family values in Islam are ordained and highly esteemed. Islam also accords primacy to the rights of women and children even in times of wars or political unrest. The OIC’s ongoing work in the area of the rights of women and children is inspired by the Islamic tradition and it joins in celebrating family values and a better future for all. Let us utilize the unique opportunity offered by the International Day of Families to pay tribute to the mothers of today for continuing to be the backbone of family unity. The unprecedented development in our lives could not have been possible without their sterling contribution. This day must also be marked by expressing a common resolve on the part of the international community to strive towards improving the conditions of families through addressing their main concerns in the ongoing discussion on the Post-2015 Agenda. The OIC will continue as an active and credible partner in this endeavor.
