OIC General Secretariat Observes Comoros Presidential Elections

On January 13, 2024, President H.E. Azali Assoumani of the Union of Comoros hosted a delegation from the General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to observe the presidential and governors' elections for the three islands that were scheduled for January 14. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Union of Comoros had invited the delegation, which was led by Mr. Namig Huseynov from the Political Department, with Mr. Dramane Traoré, Head of the Registry Department, as a member.

During the meeting, the mission conveyed the greetings of His Excellency Mr. Hissein Brahim Taha, the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), to the President of the Comoros. It also appreciated the efforts made by the Comorian government to create favorable conditions for holding the elections. The mission emphasized the importance that the OIC places on observing elections in its member states, as stipulated in the relevant provisions of the OIC Charter.

On January 12, 2024, the OIC election observation mission held a meeting with the head of the Independent National Elections Commission, who provided the mission with a briefing on the electoral process. The importance of the role of international election observers in ensuring the transparency and credibility of the elections was emphasized.

The OIC’s team observed the electoral process, including preparations in the pre-poll period, polling day, and vote counting.
