OIC Participates in Election Observation in Bangladesh

H.E. Sheikh Hasina Wajid, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, received on Monday 8 January 2024, in the capital, Dhaka, H.E. Ambassador Yusuf bin Muhammad Al-Dubaey, OIC Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs, who led a high-level delegation from the General Secretariat, at the invitation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh, to observe the general elections that took place in Bangladesh.

Ambassador Dubaey and his accompanying delegation congratulated the Prime Minister on the successful organization of the general elections. He conveyed to her the greetings of H.E. Hissein Brahim Taha, OIC Secretary-General. In turn, Sheikh Hasina appreciated the participation of the General Secretariat in observing the elections and the level of the delegation of observers. The meeting provided an opportunity to review existing cooperation between the OIC and the Republic of Bangladesh. On 5 January 2024, the mission held a meeting with the Chairman of the Election Commission of the Republic of Bangladesh, who made a briefing on the electoral process. The two sides discussed strengthening cooperation between the Election Observation Unit of the General Secretariat and the Commission. The mission stressed the importance attached by the OIC to the processes of observing elections in Member States, as stipulated in the relevant provisions of the OIC Charter. The OIC team observed the three stages of the election process: pre-poll preparations, polling day, and vote counting. The delegation concluded its mission, noting that the electoral process was transparent, free and orderly.
