OIC SECRETARY-GENERAL ADDRESSES A HIGH-LEVEL MEETING IN NEW YORK IN COMMEMORATION OF INTERNATIONAL DAY TO COMBAT ISLAMOPHOBIA

Against the backdrop of the adoption of the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 76/254, which proclaimed 15 March as “International Day to Combat Islamophobia”, the Presidency of the General Assembly and the Government of Pakistan in its capacity as the current Chair of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers would co-host a high-level event at the United Nations on 10 March 2023. The event is being hosted in collaboration with the Group of Permanent Representatives of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to the United Nations in New York.

Accordingly, the meeting, which will be chaired by H. E.Csaba Korosi, President of the UN General Assembly and H. E. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, would be attended by ministers, ambassadors and permanent representatives as well as high-level officials from all member states of the United Nations and international organizations accredited to the UN.

During the opening session, His Excellency Hissein Brahim Taha would be addressing the meeting via a video message on the importance of promoting tolerance and intra-religious harmony as a veritable means of fostering global peace, security, development and harmony among peoples.

While commending the significant efforts of the United Nations towards combating religious hatred and intolerance, the OIC Secretary-General would be inviting all members of the United Nations and the entire global community to support the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in its efforts to stamp out these ignoble acts of discrimination and hatred and crimes against humanity on the basis of religion.

In the same vein and considering the imminent convening of the 49th Council of Foreign Ministers of the OIC in Nouakchott, Islamic Republic of Mauritania on 16-17 March 2023, a high-level meeting would be held for the purpose of commemorating this important international event.
