The OIC Secretary-General, H.E. Mr. Hissein Brahim Taha, met, today, Wednesday 1st March 2023, with Mr. Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, on the sidelines of the 52nd session of the Human Rights Council.
The OIC Secretary-General welcomed Mr. Turk’s comprehensive approach to human rights. He highlighted that the OIC is very much dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights and that its covenants and mechanisms in this field are in line with international standards.
The High Commissioner for Human Rights appreciated the role played by the OIC in the field of human rights. He underlined the importance for the international community to celebrate, during the year 2023, the 75thanniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Both parties discussed various issues of common interest including the situation in Palestine, Afghanistan and Muslim communities and minorities in non-OIC member States. They agreed on the need for the international community to resolutely tackle Islamophobia and emphasized the importance to mark the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, on 15 March, in accordance with the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 76/254.
They reiterated their willingness to strengthen cooperation in the field of human rights.
