OIC Secretary-General: Developments in Al-Quds Call for Strengthening the OIC-LAS Cooperation in Supporting the City and its People

Date: 12/02/2023

H.E. Hissein Brahim Taha, the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), addressed the high-level conference in support of the Holy City of Al-Quds Ash-Sharif held at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States (LAS) in Cairo, February 12, 2023, and attended by H.E. President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt, HM King Abdullah II of Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, H.E. President Mahmoud Abbas of Palestine, and H.E. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the LAS Secretary-General.

In his statement, the OIC Secretary-General reiterated that the continued Israeli occupation measures that target Islamic and Christian holy sites in the occupied city of Al-Quds are extremely dangerous, noting the responsibility of the international community to preserve Al-Quds’ historical and legal status, especially the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, as the place of worship for Muslims alone.

Mr. Hissein Taha said that the systematic Israeli attacks and violations in Al-Quds Ash-Sharif call for strengthening the existing OIC-LAS cooperation to provide political support for the Holy City in international forums.

The Secretary-General added that the steadfastness and determination of the Maqdisites and their keenness to enable their institutions to continue providing essential services to its stationed people reflects their faith in their cause and their commitment to defending this city, its identity, history, and sanctities.

The Secretary-General considered the violations committed by Israel, the occupying power, an attack on the inalienable religious rights and heritage of the Islamic Ummah, a provocation to the feelings of Muslims around the world, a violation of freedom of worship and the sanctity of holy places, and a flagrant violation of international law and the Geneva Conventions, once again warning that their continuation threatens peace and stability in the region and the world at large.
