OIC Secretary-General Calls for Expanding Sources of Funding the ISF at its 66th Permanent Council Meeting

Date: 04/01/2023

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) held the 66th session of the Permanent Council of the Islamic Solidarity Fund, on Wednesday, 4/1/ 2023, at the headquarters of the Organization’s General Secretariat in Jeddah.

H.E. Hissein Brahim Taha, OIC Secretary-General addressed the meeting. He called for further support to ISF. He also reaffirmed that the ISF remained one of the major Islamic charitable institutions, and appealed to all Member States to provide financial support to it with the aim of promoting the principle of Islamic solidarity, stressing that this should be the duty of everyone without exception.

Mr. Taha expressed his thanks and appreciation to the countries that donated to the Fund in light of the numerous noble humanitarian missions for which it was established, through humanitarian projects in Member States, especially the least developed countries and countries with Muslim communities and minorities in all educational, cultural, health, social, religious and other sectors.

He also expressed his deep appreciation and gratitude to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulazeez, and the Crown Prince, His Royal Highness Prince Muhammad bin Salman, and to the Saudi government for its continued support to the OIC and its institutions, including the ISF.

The Secretary-General pointed out that the Islamic world witnessed major humanitarian crises during the past year due to natural disasters and armed conflicts, pointing out that the ISF made appreciable efforts within the available financial resources to help alleviate such crises. He noted that these crises were not likely to stop this year, but rather multiply due to the problems of climate change, in addition to the situation in Palestine, the Sahel region and Lake Chad basin countries, Somalia and other regions. He cautioned that this matter required expanding and diversifying sources of income, especially those related to emergencies, so that the Fund may provide humanitarian support to help the afflicted in the Member States.
