The Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), H.E. Mr. Hissein Brahim Taha, commended the efforts of Mauritania in the area of social work, child care and family empowerment, in a statement delivered on his behalf by H.E. Ambassador Tariq Ali Bakheet, Assistant Secretary General for Humanitarian, Cultural and Social Affairs, during the opening session of the regional meeting in Africa, hosted by Mauritania on December 19-20, 2022, themed, “Microfinance: Promising Opportunities and Innovative Model”.
The Secretary-General affirmed that Mauritania’s hosting of this regional meeting is of special importance for Member States, being an appropriate opportunity for sharing views and expertise and for identifying the best ways and means of implementing microfinance programs in such a way as to help reduce poverty, particularly among women.
The Secretary-General noted that microfinance is a key tool of poverty alleviation, and a main driver for development that needs to be promoted and supported in order to achieve the ambitious goal of curbing poverty and ensuring sustainable income across the world.
It is worth noting that this meeting comes as part of the efforts of the Islamic Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture to follow up implementation of the OIC’s resolutions regarding the project of establishing the Family Bank in the G-5 Sahel Countries: Burkina Faso, Chad, Niger, Mauritania and Mali.
