OIC Holds a Workshop on Humanitarian Diplomacy to help Mitigate and Cope with Humanitarian Catastrophes

The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) hosted on 17 November 2022, a workshop on humanitarian diplomacy in a changing world as part of its strategies to anticipate and cope with humanitarian catastrophes and their impacts on the vulnerable communities in the OIC region.

The OIC’s Department of Humanitarian Affairs and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) co-organized the workshop, to equip the OIC staff with new technics and knowledge to be able to apprehend emergent issues and challenges facing today’s world.

On behalf of the OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha, the Assistant Secretary General for Humanitarian, Social and Cultural Affairs, Ambassador Tarig Ali Bakheet delivered an opening statement during the workshop.

He stressed that humanitarian diplomacy should be recognized and embraced as a must know and must practice for all diplomats and foreign civil servants dealing with international affairs.

On his side, the Head of the ICRC Regional Delegation for the GCC Mamadou Sow noted that, the human and societal cost of conflict around the world has been catastrophic. Protracted conflicts are shattering nations and prolonging people's suffering.

He stressed that, the humanitarian diplomacy and promoting the respect of International Humanitarian Law remain imperative.

He added that: “We are grateful for our longstanding partnership with OIC and are hopeful the resulting synergies from today's workshop will strengthen our efforts to enhance humanitarian action to help those in need.”

The workshop is part of the implementation of the 2021-2024 Plan of Action signed on between the OIC and ICRC aimed at contributing to the capacity building of the OIC’s staff.
