Foreign Ministers of Member States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) held the Annual Coordination Meeting at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 22 September 2022 on the sidelines of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The opening session of the Annual Coordination Meeting witnessed speeches delivered by the OIC secretary-General Mr Hissein Brahim Taha and His Highness Prince Faisal Bin Farhan Al Saud, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, chair of the Islamic Summit. Other speakers were H.E. Mr Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, chair of the Annual Coordination Meeting, Mr Khaled Khiari, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Middle East, Asia and the Pacific and Mr H.E. Mr. Miguel Ángel Moratinos, High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations.
In his speech, the Secretary-General talked about the numerous security, political and economic challenges facing the Muslim world that need to be addressed through continued joint efforts in the framework of the spirit of Islamic solidarity in order to achieve stability, security, progress and well-being for Member States and their peoples.
He also touched on the developments on the question of Palestine, the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, Afghanistan, the Sahel region, Lake Chad, Central Africa, Mozambique, Guinea and Somalia. He affirmed the OIC’s commitment to finding peaceful solutions to the situation in Yemen, Libya, Iraq and Sudan, in order to ensure their security, stability and development.
The Secretary went further to review the OIC’s efforts in following up the question of the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar and the situation of Muslim communities and minorities in non- OIC Member States. He also reviewed the efforts of the OIC in combatting Islamophobia, social, cultural and developmental issues.
