OIC is Implementing Key Measures to help its Member States in Tackling the Cancer Disease

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is exerting efforts in supporting its Member States to cope with the burden of cancer disease. The organisation also continues to work with its partners in the WHO, IAEA, IsDB and others to carry out programs and activities aimed at helping the Member States to reign in the disease.

OIC Assistant Secretary General for Science & Technology Amb. Muhammad Naeem Khan stressed the point during the opening session of a training workshop aimed at promoting cancer awareness and advocacy programs in the OIC African Member States held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso on 1st August 2018.

“Health systems in many OIC Member States especially in Africa and Asia are not adequately equipped to detect and treat cancers whereas prevention measures are either weak or non-existent in a good number of these countries,” said Amb. Khan.

Over the years, the OIC in collaboration with its institutions and international partners have exerted significant efforts to develop necessary policy frameworks to help Member States build national capacities to combat cancer.

The training workshop is part of the High Level Regional Seminar on Promoting Cancer Awareness and Advocacy Programs in the OIC African Member States being held under the patronage of the First Lady of Burkina Faso H.E. Madam Sika Kabore.

The training workshop which was facilitated by experts from WHO, SESRIC, IAEA, IsDB among others, is yet another testimony of the OIC’s commitment to fighting the silent killer by bringing the training nearer to the people on a regional basis to disseminate information and expertise. The workshop also provides a platform for the exchange of ideas, experiences and best practices in the fight against cancer among OIC African Member States.

First Ladies from over a dozen OIC African Member States will also meet on 2 August 2018 to highlight their efforts in combatting the disease and issue a declaration on the next steps in these efforts.
