OIC Strongly Condemns Continued Targeting of Civilians in Aleppo by Syrian Government and its Allies

Date: 03/08/2016

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has condemned in the strongest terms the military operations carried out in Aleppo by the Syrian government and its allies where innocent civilians were targeted causing the death and injury of many, including women and children.

The OIC Secretary General, Iyad Ameen Madani, denounced the Syrian regime’s and its allies insistence on continuous shelling of residential areas and killing innocent civilians in contravention of the basic humanitarian principles and international humanitarian law. He described the acts as war crimes and crimes against humanity which are punishable under international law.

Madani emphasized the need for the international community to intervene in order to put an immediate stop to air raids and shelling of innocent civilians, and to facilitate delivery of humanitarian assistance to the blockaded parts of Syria.

He also called for a quick resumption of the political process in implementation of the United Nations Security Council resolution 2254 pursuant to the Geneva I Communiqué of 1 June 2012. The aim of the Communiqué is to find an amicable political solution that would end the suffering of the Syrian people and realize their legitimate demands for which their uprising began more than five years ago.

The Secretary General also stressed that the OIC will continue to endeavor to achieve a regional rapprochement that should lead to an effective roadmap to end the Syrian crisis.
