On the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan, to stem bloodshed in Syria, alleviate the suffering and plight of Syrians, and make way for aid organizations to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to the affected persons across Syria, the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Iyad Ameen Madani, called for a truce and ceasefire in all Syrian territory.
The Secretary General appealed to parties and regional and international actors concerned with the Syrian crisis to support this appeal, and put pressure on the Syrian government and all armed warring parties to declare a truce to halt all military operations across Syria; one that would form the basis for a future permanent cease-fire, and pave the way for the return of parties to peace negotiations to reach a comprehensive peace agreement to end the armed conflict in Syria.
Madani added that the advent of this holy month is an important religious occasion of a sacred symbolism. It is also opportunefor the renunciation of violence and affirmation of the venerable values and principles of Islam as a religion of mercy, collaboration, solidarity among Muslims, unity and resolution ofdifferences peacefully.
